Understanding BC Employer Training Grant in Depth
The B.C. Employer Training Grant is applicable to businesses that meet the following preliminary criteria:
Eligible Employers
- Must operate in the province of British Columbia.
- Includes non-profit organizations, municipal governments, regional governments, Indigenous governments, and unions representing their workers.
- Government employers (including public post-secondary institutions and crown corporations) and federal government are not eligible.
- Must apply for funding using Business BCeID.
- Must have been in full operation for at least one year.
- Must maintain a good relationship with the provincial government.
Eligible Participants
- Must be at least 16 years old and be unemployed, self-employed, your employees, or employees of other companies affected by the forestry sector downturn.
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person authorized to work in Canada.
- There should be no real or perceived conflict of interest among participants.
Eligible Training Programs
- Must align with the business and participants’ job requirements.
- Must enhance participants’ job-related skills and lead to better employment or re-employment for the unemployed.
- Training cannot exceed 52 weeks and cannot be part of a previously funded training or other federally or provincially funded training program.
- Certain types of training methods, such as consulting, coaching, seminars, and conferences, are not eligible for funding.

To apply for ETG funding, you will need to apply online through the Skills Training Grant Portal. First, you’ll need to have a Business BCeID account. If you don’t have an account yet, creating one may take up to two weeks. Yes, if you are a sole proprietor, such as a business owner, you are eligible to apply for ETG.
Generally, participants cannot apply directly. Employers must apply on behalf of themselves and their employees. However, if you are a sole proprietor, such as a business owner, you can apply and list yourself as a participant.
In one fiscal year (April 1 to March 31), employers can receive up to $300,000 in subsidies.
In one fiscal year (April 1 to March 31), employers can receive up to $10,000 in subsidies for each participant. We will assist you in reimbursing up to 80% of training costs, up to this maximum amount.
You can start training before receiving the application decision. However, if your application is denied or returned without assessment by the government, you will be responsible for any training costs incurred. It is recommended to consult with our team before deciding when to commence training.
